11La llengua que et fa sentir com a casaYou just landed in Barcelona for the first time; your whole body’s heavy from jet lag. You head to baggage claim, hoping your suit-case hasn’t been lost along the way, while trying to find the exit sign. Oh, there it is. Hold on… Why are the signs written in three languages? You know the word “salida” means “exit” in Spanish. But there’s an-other word above it: sortida. Quite similar, but obviously not the same. As you make your way to downtown Barcelona, you spot more signs in this new language: centre, supermercat, perruqueria. Later on, at a café, you overhear a group of men chatting. The only word you can make out is Barça, but the rest sounds… different. Like Spanish, but with hints of French and Italian. Curiosity gets the better of you, and you look up on your phone “language Barcelona”, finally getting an answer: Català. And just like that, the city opens up a new door to you. Welcome - or, as we say here - benvingut o benvinguda!Perhaps this isn’t how your first encounter with Català unfold-ed. Maybe it was a friend from Catalonia you met while studying
12abroad. Or your spouse, who taught you the meaning of t’estimo. Or even watching Barça games, and hearing their an- them! The thing is, it doesn’t really matter how you found out about Catalan; because from that moment onward, this language left a mark on you. That’s the power of Catalan: it captivates people with its beauty, its rich vocabulary and... the bizarre traditions that come with it. Però ja en parlarem després. Some people are taken aback when they hear this, but you don’t actually need Catalan to survive here. At least, not in Barcelona. Anyone can easily get by with Spanish and, in some cases, English. You can go about your daily life, pay your bills, order food, and get around. But surviving isn’t the same as belonging. If you want to actually live here, learning Catalan is essential. It will open doors you didn’t even know existed, and certainly ones that neither Spanish nor English could ever unlock. You’ll connect with people on a deeper level, have access to more spaces, and join in conversations you’d otherwise miss out on. You’ll understand the local culture and be welcome to join in unique traditions. It’s the secret ingredient for making your life here more fulfilling. Without it, you’ll always be nothing but a guiri. With it, you’ll finally feel at home. This book will serve as your pocket guide to Catalan language and culture. 16And then, there’s Català! At first glance, he seems shy and a bit of a loner. He likes to do things his own way, and not being told what to do. While many people mistake him for Spanish or Italian — after all, they often hang out together and have lots in common — he’s not as loud, outspoken, or charming as they are. Nevertheless, once you get to know him, you realize he’s full of surprises. He constantly takes everyone aback with his talent and creativity, and has some really original ideas for parties and celebrations. They say the best people you meet in life are those you never see coming. Català is one of them.
